I worked on a flat roof job where the Washington, D.C. government, OSHA and God said: ALL WILL WEAR HARD HATS AT ALL TIMES!
I looked up. I saw the sky. I looked left and saw Anacostia. I looked right and saw the Washington Monument.
As a point of background, US soldiers were fighting in RVN (go ask). Martin Luther King had been assisanated and so had John F Kennedy. The Russians had rockets pointed a us.
People raised their voices about the hard hats.
And then, the foreman gave blue hats to all white guys. He gave white hats to all African Americans. He gave red helmets to those he, personally, did not like and yellow helmets to new guys.
This was a pragmatic old guy who was wise.
I wonder about the safety strap in the bucket truck.
