three sailors and a monkey (math)

After a ship wreck three sailors found themselves stranded on an island. They found a monkey who led them to a pile of coconuts.

The first sailor took half of the pile for himself and then gave 1/2 of a coconut to the monkey for a reward.

The second sailor took half of what was left and also gave a half of coconut to the monkey.

The last sailor came and took half of what was left and likewise have the monkey half of a coconut.

Now there are no coconuts left. How MANY coconuts were in the pile to start with??(wink)
