3dB should not make the modems drop. Are you hitting the uBr with appox 0? Check from the node back to the head end if that looks good, then maybe the plant is off. Our system design looks for a 45 upstream level max at the tap.

Improper Sweeping of the amps
Wrong return conditioning in the tap strings (if used)
Padding in the return combining at the head end

you should be careful on reducing the padding at the node into the transmitter, as you could cause laser clipping.
