The key to changing the guide pads is to change the inner pads as well, or they will just keep wearing out on you. I flip mine around and add shims a couple times before diving into the inners. Just do that until you can afford to have the truck down for a day. I would leave the inners to the pros and have it inspected at the same time this can save the big $ in the end.
Be sure to check the "king pin" there was a serious recall on them awhile back in the 80's models
