Re: Advice on starting out in fiber splicing

We are located in VA. The work here (Norfolk) and Richmond on VZ FTTH is union controlled and allows only UG duct placement. CWA allows only in-house to pull and splice. I heard that if the in-house can't keep up on copper troublecalls then they will allow contractors to splice. Based on past pricing, those prices will probably be lower than any competent splicer will accept. Based on past engineering, the locations will require above average expertise to complete it do it right. In my opinion, an entry level tech might want to start in OSP Sonet maintenance or ISP MM before tackling the FTTH stuff. Also a entry level should try to intern for a company that, through research, has a reputation of being top notch. There are a lot of companies that do fiber but do it poorly. There has been talk of Tampa being all jacked up from entry level techs doing a job experienced techs should have done. On the other hand, prices were not high enough to obtain the experienced techs. It's kind of a vicious circle.
