If you can work in-house for a while or for another contractor using their machine, tools, etc. then go for it. You gotta find out if you even like it.....or have the patience for it.
It's expensive to get started. Fusion splicer, OTDR, light meter, light identifier, misc. hand tools....not to mention a bucket van or truck & trailer, insurance, etc...
I kept a full time job while getting started contracting for a long while so I could purchase all my gear without going broke or digging myself deep into debt.
The money can be great---when there is work. I don't know what FTTH work is paying----I've seen some terrible pricing on this site--hopefully it's much better where you are-
