A Georgia company bought cable TV systems in 18 Montana towns, including a handful in northcentral Montana communities. KLiP Interactive, based in Madison, Ga., recently completed a deal to buy the cable systems from LB Cable Properties. The deal also includes TV systems in Georgia, Florida and Wyoming. The deal involves about 3,500 Montana cable TV subscribers. The sale was finalized on June 1, 2005, and is the first acquisition for the
newly formed venture.
Bresnan Communications, which provides cable TV and other services in Great Falls and other larger Montana cities, is the big cable player in the state. Bresnan has about 22,000 subscribers in the Great Falls area.
KLiP bought cable systems in Belt, Chester, Dutton, Valier and Vaughn/Sun Prairie. Elsewhere in Montana, the deal includes systems in Big Sky, Culbertson, Darby, Ennis, Hot Springs,
Paradise, Plains, Plentywood, Poplar, Scobey, St. Ignatius. St. Regis and West Yellowstone.
There are 3,500 subscribers in Montana and pass about 6,500 homes. KLiP Interactive is a newly formed company, and the cable systems are its first acquisition. The company is wholly
owned by the Kukwa-Lemmerz family, which has successful ventures in the automotive and information technology industries, according to a company news release.
The acquisition is the first step in plans to provide 21st century broadband services to the underserved rural markets in America said Joe Sheehan, the president and chief executive of
KLiP Interactive.
The company plans to complete significant upgrades in the next 18 months but would not say specifically what changes might be coming to Montana communities, But Our plans are to upgrade all the properties at this time eventually. The systems pass approximately 36,000 homes and currently serve approximately 14,000 subscribers. KLiP plans to begin immediately a rebuild of the properties, estimated to take about 24 months to complete.
Wyoming communities acquired in the acquisition are Kemmerer, Diamondville, Afton, Big Piney, Dubois, Frontier, Fort Bridger, La Barge, Lyman, Marbleton, Medicine Bow, Meeteetse, Oakley, Pinedale, Urie. The plans include the construction of a “super headend” serving all the markets, which will be linked together via fiber.
KLiP plans to utilize RUS (Rural Utilities Service) funding for a portion of the rebuild capital; RUS funds were established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to support the construction, improvement and acquisition of facilities and equipment for broadband service in eligible rural communities. KLiP Interactive of Madison, Ga., has closed a deal to purchase the assets of LB Cable Properties for $5.25 million in cash.
