Anyone who's been in the business long enough will remember the days of connecting telephone lines to cable boxes also. Time was, there was no reliable return path in a cable system, so the box needed a phone line to upload its pay per view billing information. Just like a DirecTV receiver does now.
After cable developed a working return path, it eliminated the need for a phone line. It also opened up the return path to allow cable modems to work. A satellite video system has no return path, so it still requires the phone line. A few years ago, someone developed a satellite system with an RF return. They called it DirecPC.
