Hey Wolf, If you just need to do inventory management of cable... I would say the easiest thing is a cool little tool I picked up a few years back. It works like a TDR but just gives a number to the "open" or "short"... You can program the VOP and it is dead on accurate and gives an instant reading.
I carry it for all of my trouble shooting now. It is about 7" high and 4" wide and 1.5" thick. Retail was about $400 but I got mine from a pawn shop for $30. It works for all kinds of coax and wire - it has a little chart on the back of basic VOP's.
I'll see if I can get some better info on it as to a brand name and a pic if you want it.
