CWA is the best example of a perfect union IMO. Phone installers for BellSouth start at around 50k-60k and IF they volunteer for Saturday work they can make up to 100k!!!
My local Comcast office is unionized by the electrical union and they do not do so well. I understand they only make $12-$14 per hour. If we were to unionize CWA is the way to go, but you would probably need to work for an HSP or a contractor that have brought their tech's in house. I have heard that if you are a CWA member first then you start working for a company, that that person could recruit others into the union.
I also understand that what a union does is bring the highest paid persons in the company down a notch and bring the lowest paid persons up a notch (or two, or three). This maybe seen as some sort of Socialistic scheme to some, but to me it is our right as US citizens to speak out against the greedy few that are stepping on our shoulders and holding us down.
DTV would not hire illegals to install the satellite systems. Hell, they cant even speak english. Most of the customers I have installed wouldn't let them illegals in the door. Remeber, as technicians for DirecTV WE are the face of the company. WE are usually the only person they will meet that represents DirecTV.
WE HAVE THE POWER!
Just repeat after me, (while raising your fists)
UNION, UNION, UNION, UNION, UNION!
