If you don't know that power is grounded to the water main, you need to either:
A. Get out more,
B. Get out of the business, or
C. Stay very quiet
Anyone out there can, at their next install in a house with a basement, follow the number 6 AWG power ground back to the water main. If you look real close, you'll also see a #6 jumper across the water meter. This jumper is there to provide a path across a water meter that may have plastic parts inside.
Since the electric service is grounded to the water main, we are allowed to use a metallic cold water pipe as a bonding point. Using a cold water pipe as a ground for either CATV or DBS would be useless if the electric service wasn't grounded there also.
