Re: News Flash !

I performed maintenance on one of the most active fiber networks in the nation and routine maintenance was always done from midnight-6am, Sun-Thur. We cut in/out customers on active rings and daytime prep and most circuit work was done during this time. We shot new rings and did dark fiber ISP work during the day in anticipation of cutting the active circuit through that night. We were not allowed to enter cases during the day to prevent active circuits from the inherent risk. We did enter some cases during the day, but only after proving ourselves for a number of years on the network. Night work required a sharp fiber tech to do it right and that was a higher than normal pay. Unfortunately these sharp techs left the company due to the company not recognizing their contribution and worth. Now that company has struggled and made numerous mistakes causing the customer to lose trust. It all boils down to ability and compensation. Night work requires a unusual tech paid at a high rate. Most customers don't believe this, but don't know what is done during these"maintenance windows". The window even though midnight-6am, restricts dropping a circuit after 5am. This additional time is allotted for traying up fibers, allowing those slow-a$$ Fujitsu/ATM rings to clear, and closing/hanging the cases.
