The Interstate 69 Steering Committee is composed of representatives from the eight state departments of transportation in the Interstate 69 corridor -- Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas -- and from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) serves as Committee’s lead agency and provides administrative support.
Originally called the Corridor 18 Steering Committee, the group was formed following 1991 passage of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA), which created a number of high-priority transportation corridors of national significance.
Initially, Corridor 18 extended from Indianapolis to Memphis via Evansville, Indiana. Other areas, including ISTEA Corridor 20 (which extended from Texarkana to the Lower Rio Grande Valley) would later become part of the I-69 corridor.
• In 1998, Corridor 18 was designated Interstate 69 in the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21). The Corridor 18 Steering Committee became The Interstate 69 Steering Committee. Read the History In Brief.
From 1991 to 2000, the Steering Committee directed three initial corridor studies, which laid the groundwork for planning at the state and regional levels.
