PERLEY BORES 170 MILES OF CABLE IN PEORIA
One hundred seventy miles isn't hard to grasp when you consider travel. By car that's about three hours, more or less. But when you consider directional boring for a total of 170 miles, it's quite another matter. That's the distance between Peoria, Ill. and St. Louis, Mo.
That's what Perley Cable Construction, Inc. has tackled. Perley is boring 170 miles of cable TV replacement in greater Peoria, a metropolitan area with a population of 338,000 in nearly 1800 square miles. Perley is in the middle of the project now and will complete it in the summer of 1994.
The cable replacement project is for TCI, based in Denver, which is said to be world's largest cable television operations company. TCI's original Peoria plant and cable was installed in 1972 and is now being replaced and upgraded with a fiber optics network system.
Perley originally bid and won the cable installation contract as a trenching project. However, as Jim Perley, president of Perley Cable Construction, studied his bid calculations, he grew apprehensive of the restoration work involved. "It would have required an army for restoration after trenching," Perley said. By his estimate, trenching would have required 50 percent more labor and taken two to three times longer than guided boring.
Those second thoughts led Perley to consider the possibility of installing the cable by directional drilling. He only had limited acquaintance with guided boring, but he decided it was worth a try.
In a sense, the TCI Peoria job is a "test bed" for directional boring. This job pits it against high production requirements. Thus far, both TCI and Perley are pleased with the production efficiencies they have achieved.
The TCI project has kept Perley's crews and equipment occupied. The company anticipates that more and more cable installations will move to directional boring, especially in developed areas. Perley plans to broaden its operations both in a wider service area and in utility boring applications. With a 170-mile guided boring record, the company will be in a good position to capitalize on its experience as it moves into new fields.
