I was just thinking after I posted my last comment, If you have ever watched high voltage arcing between two electrodes on a jacobs ladder, the arc will get "stuck" at any kinks, nicks or sharp bends in the wire. If the wire is smooth the arc will travel evenly up the electrodes until it reaches the top of the ladder and then starts again at the bottom...I think it's the perfect example!
