We all know that electricity will follow the path of least resistance. I would think that if lightning were to actually ground through your #4 wire, or what is it - 12ga for installs, that if it were enough to blow out at that bend, then it would blow out the wire regardless, wouldn't it?
Not challenging it, and I know what the nec says, just looking at the "real world" situation?
