I'm not sure if the previous post answered your question. Yes, the outside edges of the cladding are what is analyzed to determine splice loss. Unfortunately, a good splice falls on the cable manufacturer's quality more than the fusion splicer. I'm not saying V grooves and mass machines are total pieces of crap, just that they each have specific applications for their use. I feel that designers and some contractors may not be familiar with these applications and it adds to the overall problem of low rates, pissed off customers, contractors halfway through projects and discovering major problems.
