Looks as if you have solved the problem with low batteries.
My Grandpaw used tools like this too. I have his still-but I dont dare placing wallfish or outdoor outlets with it I also have one of his "push drivers" meant to making unscrewing easier (I consider myself lucky to have power tools)-and use today; the DTV commercials would get one hell of a laugh from thier audience while the instaler pulled this out of the tool bin.
FYI-the commercial used to advertise the installer had tools that were litterally 'glued in', so that the tools did not rattle while on the job in the xtmer installation commercial a few years back.
