It is kinda like becoming a Harbor Pilot. Real hard to break into. The best thing to do is find a "GOOD" splicing company that has excellent customer references, and call one of their tech's. Most entry level guys think it's bags o' cash and prestige. You earn every penny. Some fibers I splice have a fine of $100,000 for 5 minutes of outage. Others are $53,000 per minute. It can be a very stressful and meticulace job that requires a person to clear everything from their head before digging into a splice tray that has been worked for 12 years by people who don't care about quality. Those guys haven't lasted long and I make a good living from mediocre fiber splicers. Only the best last and make six figures. Don't be fooled by the money, it will cost you. As far as $25/splice. This may be true, but is getting rare these days. I have seen prices drop due to inexperienced companies racing for the "Lowest Bid" My company still charges top dollar because we are the best. We have proved ourselves to customers after several companies did their work and there were problems. We come in because a customer asks their peer for the best fiber splicing company after dealing with small and large subs that jack their network and argue over their results. We are meticulace, perfectionists that love fiber optics. We thrive on challenges and critical deadlines, and a 2am outage makes our pulse quicken with excitement, especially when customers are down hard. We love having 2 high level executives over our shoulder, 3 more on a conference bridge, as a circuit prepares to clear. We can explain why a -20dB is good or bad to a room of electrical engineers, and feel just a comfortable in a John Alexander suit or a pair of Carhartt Coveralls. A monkey can learn to splice in 4 hours, but the prep, equipment, theory, and expertise to do it right takes 4 years or longer. Good Luck!
