Depending on the value of the equipment in alot of state keeping somebody from their property can be charged as grand larceny.
If they have receipts stating you are in posession of said equipment then you need turn it over. If they have no receipt, then just say you don't have any equipment.
I have had a similar situation happen at a place I worked where they wanted their equipment back before paying me. They called me right after I parked their van and said I had enough of working and not getting paid. I just gave em back their stuff to avoid a hassle. Ya know what ? .....5 weeks later and they still owe me over a grand.
