All that really matters is that the signal is within the operating margins of the cable modem or box, and also that there is not an abundance of insertion loss back to the pole because of large, or multiple splitters. I dont know the specs on sat/catv combiner/diplexers, but i would imagine there is a spec sheet on insertion losses at specific frequencies. Just keep in mind, that if you have signal that is in the operating margins of the modem, you still can have no synch if you have too much return insertion loss. Typically, a modem has a return transmit level between 24 to 55 db. This being if the main line is set up with a 20db unity gain return. The lowest catv tap value is a 4 (20 + 4)=24. I've seen digital boxes and cable modems work with return transmit levels above 55, but below 60, but they tend to lose connectivity here and there. Just err on the side of caution and run a dedicated outlet for the modem, instead of trying to cheat out by using a splitter/combiner/ diplexer setup. It will save you headaches if you dont have enough signal, and ensures the customer that what they are paying for will work flawlessly within reason. Do the right thing!
