McCain Eyes a la Carte
John McCain, the Arizona Republican and chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, is getting involved in the a la carte debate inside the Beltway.
McCain recently wrote Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell on program choice for consumers, asking Powell and the commission to explore options "within your authority to promote a la carte cable and satellite offerings as soon as possible."
McCain said, "A la carte pricing would enable consumers to pay for only those channels they want to watch. It would undoubtedly benefit consumers who watch only three or four cable channels or who may be on a limited budget. It may also have the effect of disciplining cable rates overall."
The senator added, "I believe that some cable and satellite companies may be willing to offer consumers more choice if they had the ability to do so." In addition, McCain asked Powell and the FCC to scrutinize program choice for consumers in Canada as part of the commission's current efforts to study a la carte.
The FCC is taking comments on a la carte for a report it will submit to the House Energy and Commerce Committee in November.
