i have been lashing cable in alberta, canada for 20 years and i have seen how well some lashes last and some dont. the most common we have seen is right by the bug nut and figured it to be caused by the temp c clamp we were using to secure the lash wire before we wrapped it around the strand. now we just use tape to lashing wire for a temp and seen much less breaks.
