SBC Communications said it plans to spend between $4 billion and $6 billion during the next five years to deploy a fiber network that will deliver advanced services to customers throughout its service territory. The company also said it's working with Microsoft on the project, and both plan to begin field trials later this year for an IP-based TV platform that will be supported by the fiber network. The network will consist of fiber built to a consumer's home or to a neighborhood node, in which the last hundred feet would consist of existing copper wire.

What VoIP Awareness? - More than half (54 percent) of Internet users in the United States are still unaware of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), states new research from Ipsos-Insight. And among those who have heard of VoIP, the majority (56 percent) are confused about how the Internet-based telephone service works, the research firm said. The recent study was conducted by Ipsos-Insight among more than 1,200 Internet users in the United States.

New College Net - College entertainment network Zilo Networks and Comcast Media Center said they are partnering to launch a campus television narrowcasting pilot in cooperation with five colleges and universities: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University, BUCKITV at Ohio State University, Seattle Community Colleges and the University of Georgia. The narrowcasting trial will enable participating colleges and universities to automate several functions involved in programming local channels. This includes having Zilo's content delivered by satellite from the Comcast Media Center and storing it on local servers, along with locally produced programming, the company said.
