As I am sure that you have heard already, going 16 QAM is going to be painful at first if your plant has any age on it. As far as our SNR, the levels did drop about 3dB when the change took place. Most of our issues were with ingress issues that did not show up when we were running QPSK. The good thing about 16 QAM is that all of your noise issues will rise to the surface. You will really have no choice but to have your plant at optimal performance. Also, any slight issues with your return sweep will affect performance, mainly with packet loss. My division was actually the first in the country to go full 16 QAM on every CMTS. It is not easy, but it is a great learning experience. You will find that troubleshooting by packet loss, and your return sweep will be your best freinds. In addition, we have run up on some situations where a feeder span would not pass 16 QAM. The strange thing is that you will not find anything physically wrong, and your TDR will not show any faults. It is rare, but dont pull your hair out if that happens to you. Best of luck on your upgrade. Trust me, you'll be a better technician after the experience.
