The NEC is not 'law' like the police will arrest you, but it is 'law' to where you can have the bejesus sued out of you for breaking code, and if it is a serious enough offense that caused loss of life or maiming somebody, I would imagine jail time could be involved. Do crap work and sooner or later it will come back to haunt you.
