If this guy owes you money he does not have the right to mask his misfortune and make it your problem. A lot of people get in this industry and have banner years and all is well. Well F>>> that, this business goes on in good times and in bad times. If the want to be big shots can't make their payrolls when times are a little harsh they do not deserve the spoils from there underlings.
If you did the work and it is to spec I say Bug the hell out of him. It is not you fault if does not get paid, you contract is with him.
