IN my short (6 years) as a splicer 99% of my locations were underground. I have found every utility possible in cable vault, ped, or manhole, including gas. The ones that really got me were the "private" connections. I have had to work around lawn sprinkler valves and wiring for post lights that were done by the homeowner or their contractor.
I cant count how many phone drops I have seen cut by new guys thinking they were rg-11 and trying to do the right thing by cutting them back to the nearest tap.
Fortunately, I have never been put into the unfortunate circumstance that the gentleman who started this post was.
I'd have to say one of the worse was a plastic vault in a yard where the home owner was using the vault to dispose of their dog's droppings. No, I did not splice that one. They eventually Cut the cable and location back to make it less convenient for the homeowner to use. Talk about your sh!tty locations.
