typical responses

its funny, how people will glorify themselves by saying how stupid a guy is for something, rather than offering help.

Personally, I have made some pretty good errors in my days of CATV, and Im VERY sure that everyone else has too.

So, anyone who judges this guy for what happened, rather than offering solutions, can f*** off.

As for some solutions, try finding out if you are an employee or not. If you were trained by this company, they have an obligation to train you safely, which should include a safety manual. while it is unfortunate that this happened, typically an employer cant fire you unless you were reckless in regards to the proper way to handle this situation. In your case, without a specific guideline, your judgement was incorrect, but not reckless.

If you are a sub-contractor who had previous knowledge of the scope of work, you can be 'fired ' for any reason, and should consider this as a growing pain, and reckognize how lucky you are
