If you just want to see if you have light---- You can get an infared detection card. It is the size of a credit card. They cost $8.95. Fiberinstrumentsales.com Part # F1-4103 for 1300/1550n/m. For a light level, a hand held power meter, part# F1-8513HH will run you $395.00.

For $8.95 these cards work pretty well.
PS. I don't work fofr FIS.
Better to do an inch right then do a mile and do it twice.
