You have to be flexible and change with the technology. I don't think the author is bashing the cable company, but as we all have learned that hindsight is 20/20 and technologly is sure changing look at all the big Fiber Optic companies that overspent and went BK,
now new ones are up and running at a fraction of the cost, because of lessons learned from the mistakes of others and technology has advanced very rapidly in a short time, the major phone companies are looking for new ways just like cell phone providers, if the cable companies sit back and wait to recoup they will be left behind again. And yes you should hope they are ready to make the changes so they can help keep paying the bills.
