A Ditch Witch 100sx is a small machine - looks like a rototiller - that might work for you. A used one can be had for $1000-2000 depending on age. It can be hauled in the back of a pickup truck and should be used for nice soft ground conditions only.
We use Ditch Witch 410sx's which require a F250 and a trailer to pull. But where we bury the ground is rocky so we need the extra muscle.
