Bill you freggin jackass, there are no tricks to this. What you are saying is, use a TDR to find a DC-12 with the output legs cut in backwards feeding a 4 tap? A zero pad in the ol' LE that should have a 15 pad? A 23 tap that was changed to a 7/2 because the service tech was to lazy to change out a bad drop? Do you go out of your way to be a horse's ass, or doe's it come natural to you? If the noise is high you can't assume you have bad cable/ equipment you moron.
