Well Bill,
In reply to your "below the belt" remark about "possibly re-referencing" with respects to sweeping feed-thru connectors, you are so so wrong...lol. I am not gonna get into a pissing contest with you but please read on.
May I suggest that you learn troubleshooting techniques and how to isolate and analyze basic cable problems. Cable-101 including proper sweep procedures and reflection analysis is a good start. Remember, anybody (well almost anybody) can "swap out a connector", but it does take some talent to know "why" a specific connector be changed other than the "they suck" theroy. That is why the cost of maintaining a CATV plant has risen throughout the years.
Just because you have had problems making your system work with them and had to remove them is not my problem sir. Any connector that is improperly installed and maintained will have problems...even a 1-GHz PIN. Yes, I agree that they (feed-thru's) should not be used, but unfortunately the "bean counters" do not agree and the industry must deal with them in many instances. All I was trying to say was that a properly maintained plant will yield a low percentage of problems...but that's another story.
As for CPD being caused by feed-thru connectors....well, you asked for it:
1. CPD or Common Path Distortion is, yes, a distortion caused by dissimilar metals. THIS IS TRUE!!!!
2. BUT, ONLY WHEN CORROSSION IS PRESENT. This can happen with a PIN-conx, an "F" barrel or a bad connetion at the common point of a diplex filter in an amplifier module to mention a few.
3. A "feed -thru" with no corrossion and in an acceptable state will not cause this, BUT corrosion or a blackened copper clad stinger in a PIN will.
4. If the theory that ALL dissimilar metal junctions in the CATV world causes it (without corrosion present), we would be fighting a loosing battle. Besides, isn't a copper clad stinger to a stainless steel PIN-conx also dissimilar??!?!?!
I am not defending feed-thru's, just attempting to give some logical "cost effective" advice. Don't take this post as an attack to you, but rather a defense to your "tasteless comment".
PS - Thank you WARFIN for your comments!!!
