JUst like spongebob says there are typically 2 different references when speaking in terms of suck outs. Your tech may say to you "i have a suck out on channel 38 he is refering to the fact that this specific channel has a noticeably lower level than surrounding channels this can occur for several different reasons, I have seen bad bridger modules take a specific channel out ,filters,AGC's certain types of specific passives and some different componenets of an active.
Any connector, center conductor suck out that you refer to is going to affect your lower channels. Depending on the sevarity whether it be a loose siezure screw or -40 degrees farenhiet pulling the center conductor from the connector, you might still have pictures and a little VA but its going to be snowy channels and low AC garrunteed. You will usually retain your higher channels ( again depending on the sevarity) because of what is know as the" Skin Affect " This has to do with the fact that your higher frequencies travel on the outer most surface area of the conductor therefore in the event of a suck out they are able to either bridge the gap or may still be slightly in contact with whatever it is pulling away from.
The Skin Affect has also been labeled as the cause for specific channel suck outs. If the center conductor was not properly prepared during intial splicing ( Scrapping with a Metal blade) The integrity of the conductor is jeprodized. YOu may have a frequency cruising along on the outer part of this conductor and all of a sudden that outer most part is gone or has been damaged by a siezure pin or something and Boom no more higher frequency.
There are at least one hundred theories and problems that can occur in CATV and you can never here enough stories from the techs out there about stuff they have found to cause problems. Because eventually if you stay in the biz long enough you will find a few of them yourself.
Take Care
