Owed money, need advice

I need some advice, I worked for an out fit out of Brookfield, Vt called Eustis Cable Enterprises and when I got done they did not pay out my last check plus expenses owed totaling $1627.19 now what legal action can I take that will get my money back but not cost me more than the above amount? I invoice them on a weekly basis, the owner Mike Palmer even called me and told me that he would get a check out to me that Friday, (3 weeks before Christmas) well I know the mail is a little slow, but not that slow, does anyone have any advice on how I can collect this money owed?
