I must say that having others rub your nose in it is not condusive but somewhat accurate.
You made a choice now you have to live with it BUT, I would say go on craigslist and look for a gig that does not do a background check. At the same time I would be looking into what another dawg suggested. Talk to an attorney or legal services to maybe get it off your record.
If theft is not you? Well I suggest you look into WHY you did it.................
