If you subbed in an HSP system, then you very well could be considered an employee, by law.  You are told when you are to be at your appointments, how to do your job, what uniform to where, so on and on.  Legally, you were DirectSat's employee.  Go after them, these HSP's need to better screen their contractors.  Too many crooks and just uneducated business people out there ripping us off.
