Job Description

The Directional Drill Trainer provides leadership and communication between the Drill crews, Drill Foreman, the Supervisor and operational management. This position is responsible for training Drill crews, ensuring jobs are progressing as scheduled and recommending modifications to schedules.

Responsibilities:

Trains employees to operate Vermeer and Ditch Witch Directional Drills;
Trains employees to operate DCI and Subsite locating systems;
Trains employees to operate directional drill equipment designed for drilling in rock, including dual rod machines, air hammers, and cobble rock drill housings;
Trains employees on how to determine running lines and best practices for directional drilling;
Trains employees on how to mix mud and what different drill additives can do to help with mud mixtures;
Educates employees on the different types and brands of drill tooling available, including what they should and shouldn’t use on different types of drills;
Assists Foreman and crew with understanding scope of a job and it’s contract;
Communicates project progress to Project Management/Supervisor on a timely basis;
Recommends changes to work schedule to ensure jobs will be completed on time and to the customer’s requirements;
Monitors quality control programs and take appropriate actions to ensure quality standards are met;
In coordination with the Regional Safety Analyst, communicates and enforces safety initiatives and DOT compliance;
Assists crews with equipment maintenance scheduling;
Provides timely positive and negative feedback to both trainees and their managers to ensure appropriate communication of all parties and allow for appropriate employee performance management;
Reports employee development progress to management;
Performs the duties of any field personnel as needed;
Maintains focus and commitment to continuing education with regard to equipment, production and safety trends, techniques and requirements;
All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Working knowledge of and operation of Vermeer and Ditch Witch drilling equipment as well as DCI and Subsite locating equipment is required, working knowledge of and operation of rock drilling equipment is strongly preferred. At least 10 years of experience is preferred;
Good, honest and respectful written and verbal communications skills;
Mechanical knowledge of directional drills, vacs, and other industry-utilized equipment;
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals;
Ability to read electronic and paper job-related schematics, maps and prints;
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations;
Travel is required;
Commitment to the time necessary to ensure the success of the program, including occasional evenings and/or weekends, etc;
Ability to work with different types of people and management with varying levels of skills and knowledge;
Knowledge and experience in Internet software, spreadsheet and word processing software required;
Must maintain a current DOT health card certificate;
Must maintain a valid driver’s license and a good driving record;
OSHA 30 certification required;
Class A CDL license is strongly preferred

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

Frequently stand and sit
Occasionally kneel, squat, bend and twist
Ability to enter and exit equipment/vehicles
Frequent use of sight, hearing and voice
Safely lift up to 25 lbs consistently, occasionally lift up to 50 lbs, rarely lift up to 75 lbs
Occasionally work in adverse weather conditions
Occasionally work on slippery, uneven and/or other irregular surfaces
Be in a moderately noisy environment
Ability to safely wear job-specific PPE including but not limited to eye, hearing, head, respiratory and foot protection as well as appropriate high visibility clothing
Frequently perform routine and repetitive tasks with hands, arms, feet and/or legs (eg: heavy equipment operation, to the use of a computer keyboard, monitor, mouse, and other office equipment.
