Qualifications

Minimum of 10 years of fiber splicing experience. Minimum two years of proven supervisory position. Strong understanding of CWDM, DWDM, and mux systems. Working knowledge of a variety of splicing tools, equipment and techniques. BICSI Certification – Tech 2 or greater. Safety training as required by specific projects. Deep knowledge of all types of fiber optic testing, including Power Meters and OTDR. Ability to drive, operate bucket trucks, and pull trailers. Adhere to company policies.

Job Description

Responsible for leading all aspects of fiber splicing, termination, and testing requirements. This includes a wide variety of work environments and will not be limited to underground, aerial, and industrial job sites. The Fiber Technician Supervisor will be responsible for leading a team of Fiber Technicians and maintaining project tracking information such as production sheets, time sheets, customer required paperwork, and all documentation necessary for timely invoicing. Additional responsibilities include performing all aspects of the project in accordance with BICSI standards and applicable building codes. The Fiber Technician Supervisor will be responsible for fiber splicing, termination, testing, and auditing. Must be familiar with fiber optic splice closures, OTDR testing, optical power meters and fiber identifiers. Will be called upon to build CWDM, DWDM, and mux add/drop circuits. This is a working supervisor role that will be responsible for teaching best industry practices to staffed Fiber Technicians.

Primary Duties
• Lead Fiber Technicians through scheduling, preparation, and execution of daily projects
• Reporting on daily progress
• Ensuring best practices are followed and standards are met according to the Technician Handbook
• Ensuring consumables and equipment are properly stocked and assigned
• Prepping and fusion or mechanical splice SM and occasionally MM fiber optic cables, in both outdoor and indoor settings
• Splicing on CWDM and/or DWDM systems in order to add/drop channels at the customer premise
• Construct proper splice cases pressurized and non-pressurized, using all types and sizes of cable, including but not limited to: grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage and sealing
• Able to perform a mid-sheath ring cut splice on both loose tube buffer and ribbon fiber
• Testing and troubleshooting fiber using an OTDR, optical power meter, tone meter, fiber identifier and scope
• Provide the OSP Engineers with detailed reports of field splicing activity
• Work flexible hours, after hours work which would include nights and weekends
• On call rotation responding and restoring services for emergency calls, responsible for being on the job at short notice to repair damaged cables until service is restored.
• Review and interpret underground and aerial cable records in existing records, on maps or in the field
• Make precise recommendations for changes in running fiber optic cables, or provides input into construction methodologies
• Participate in engineering, permit and construction processes
• Perform all work as necessary to conform to quality control guidelines (includes compliance with requirements outlined in applicable regulations such as: OSHA, FCC, NESC and NEC, etc ; as well as following procedures as outlined in the Installation, Technical, Operations, and Safety Manuals, and Employee Handbook)
• Clean, maintain, stock, and secure assigned vehicle and equipment
• Perform other duties as requested by supervisor.

Additional Responsibilities
• Fiber Splicing - Preparing various types of fiber optic cables and tools for splicing, operate fiber optic test equipment, reading and understanding the test results for troubleshooting purposes.
• Customer Service - Interaction with project owners, engineers and coordinating with customers and engineers for scope changes and communicating those changes to the Project Manager.
• Team Leader – Ability to assist in supporting a group to successfully complete an assigned task, share knowledge and experience with the team, mentor junior technicians.
• Reporting – Provide timely feedback of task status, changes, issued, concerns and results
• Other – Serves as backup to other positions at the direction of management; and other duties as assigned.
• Provide continued education and training for new and existing Fiber Technicians.

Working Conditions and Work Environment
• Exposure to varying temperatures as work is primarily outside.
• Noise levels are moderate to heavy.
• Work in different types of terrain including mud, sand, and dirt.
• Varying degrees of light as work may beginning early morning and continue in the evenings.
• Travel from home overnight and for extended periods
